Desmond Williams, MD, PhD
CDC Country Director, Liberia
Dr. Desmond Williams joined CDC in 2002 and has worked globally as the Acting Country Director in Ghana, where he provided strategic leadership on CDC’s Global AIDS Program. Desmond supported CDC’s Ebola response in West Africa beginning in October 2014. In Sierra Leone, he led both the Western Area and district operations for the epidemiology team and was one of the architects of the enhanced active surveillance strategy, known as the Western Area Surge, designed to drive Ebola out of Freetown. He also served as Country Lead for the Ebola response in Liberia. Desmond was the Associate Branch Chief for the Epidemiology and Statistics Branch in the Division of Diabetes Translation. He also founded and leads the Chronic Kidney Disease Initiative and coordinates a chronic kidney disease workgroup.
