Reported Cases of Rabies in Raccoons, by County, 2014
The figure shows a map of the United States with highlighted counties where rabid raccoons were reported during 2014. Histogram represents number of counties in each category (light grey for 1 tested animal; medium grey for two to five tested animals; and dark grey for six to 672 tested animals) for total number of raccoons submitted for rabies testing. Point locations (red dots) for rabid raccoons were randomly selected within each reporting jurisdiction. The majority of cases occurred in the eastern United States. A few cases were also reported in central Texas. The total number of reported cases involving raccoons in 2014 was 1,822, representing 30.2 percent of all wildlife rabies cases in the United States.
