About Bangladesh

Bangladesh is the host site for the first IMPACT program in Asia. Bangladesh is a lower-middle income country located in South East Asia between India and Myanmar. It is divided into 7 administrative regions, further subdivided into 349 districts, 489 upazilas, 4,553 unions and 40,977 wards. It is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with a population of 159.7 million in 566,977 square miles. Approximately 1/3 of the population (47 million) lives in poverty (World Bank, 2016).

Agriculture is the country’s main industry, followed by manufacturing and mineral resources. In 2014, the country’s Gross National Income was $1,080 USD, and its health expenditure per capita was $32 USD (World Bank, 2016). Tuberculosis remains the leading cause of death in the country (World Health Organization, 2016).

IMPACT Program-Bangladesh

IMPACT-Bangladesh is a single track, two-year fellowship program. Enrollment is highly competitive and limited only to medical doctors. The program begins with a three-week selection course that selects up to ten fellows from a group of highly-qualified finalists.

In 2016, IMPACT-Bangladesh completed their selection process, choosing the first cohort of six fellows. The selected fellows were matched to health complexes located in Mymensingh, Chittagong, Comila, Sylhet, Moulvi Bazar/Sanumgani, and Bogra.
