NPHI Stories: Strengthening Public Health Systems: Cambodia National Institute of Public Health (NIPH)
On a recent trip to Cambodia, CDC’s National Public Health Institute (NPHI) and the International Association of Public Health Institutes (IANPHI) teams gained a better understanding of the country’s public health system. The May 2016 meeting allowed NPHI and IANPHI teams to consult with the Ministry of Health (MoH), the Ministry of Planning, NAMRU2, University Research Corporation, WHO, Institut Pasteur, USAID, and Germany (GIZ).
CDC, MoH, and partners identified opportunities to support and build a strong Cambodian NIPH, including the following:
- Build a more comprehensive reference lab accredited by the International Organization for Standardization,
- Increase the use of public health data and evidence to set policy,
- Develop the country’s public health research agenda, and
- Build on NIPH’s established Master’s in Public Health program to expand Cambodia’s public health career track.
