New York City Department of Public Health
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, under the direction of Commissioner Thomas A. Farley, M.D., M.P.H, is responsible for protecting and promoting the physical and mental health of all New Yorkers. New York City has long been a leader in addressing health challenges facing large and diverse populations. From improving water quality and sanitation in the 1800s to vaccinating residents against disease in the 1900s to leading the fight against smoking in the current century, the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) has set high standards and improved population health through innovative strategies. Launched in 2004, Take Care NewYork set a robust agenda for improving the health of New Yorkers by focusing on the most important issues affecting health and employing evidence-based interventions that work. Take Care NewYork 2012 focuses on reducing health disparities and improving access to high-quality, prevention-oriented health care, such as stopping the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
